Definitions of Human Resource Management

Human Resource Management (HRM) is concerned with the "people" aspect of management. Because every organization is made up of people, acquiring their services, developing their skills, motivating them to perform at a high level, and ensuring that they maintain their commitment to the organization are all critical to achieving organizational goals. Regardless of the type of organization – government, business, education, health, recreation, or social action – this holds true. Organizations that can attract, develop, motivate, and retain exceptional employees will be both effective and efficient in meeting their objectives (expanding the least amount of resources necessary). Inefficient and ineffective organizations run the risk of stagnating or going out of business.

Human resource management encompasses those activities designed to provide for and coordinate the human resources of an organization Human resource functions refer to those tasks and duties performed in organizations to provide for and coordinate human resources (Byars and Rue, 2008). It is basically a method of developing potentialities of employees so that they feel maximum satisfaction of their work and give their best efforts to the organization (Pigors and Myers, 2005).

  • Human Resource Management (HRM), according to Thomas G. Spates, is "a code of ways of organizing and treating individuals at work so that they can achieve the greatest possible realization of their intrinsic abilities, thus achieving maximum efficiency for themselves and their group, and thus providing the determining competitive advantage and optimum results to the enterprise of which they are a part."

  • Human Resource Management (HRM) is concerned with obtaining and maintaining a satisfied work force, as stated by George Terry. HRM is concerned with maximizing the effectiveness of the work force through the implementation of sound and proven personnel policies and practices, he added.

  • Human Resource Management (HRM), according to Dale Yoder, is the function or activity that assists and directs working men and women in maximizing their contributions and satisfaction in their jobs. It assists 'workers,' including all those who work, from unskilled common laborers to corporation presidents or public administrators, to combine their efforts with those of others in providing the services and products we all want.

  • Human Resource Management (HRM), in the words of Flippo, is the planning, organizing, directing, and controlling of the procurement, development, compensation, integration, and maintenance and separation of human resources with the goal of achieving individual, organizational, and societal goals.

According to method system view, human resources management is that the systematic coming up with, development, associated management of a network of reticular process poignant and involving all members of organisation. These process include: – Human resources planning – Job and work style – Staffing – coaching and development – Performance appraisal and review – Compensation and reward – worker protection and illustration – Organisation improvement. To effectively manage these process, human resources systems are planned, developed and enforced through the combined efforts of all managers and human resources specialists – and regularly all staff – in an organisation. Overall, the systems are intended to win organisation-wide goals and contribute to organisational effectiveness and productivity. From the preceding definitions it should be terminated that there's no customary definition of the term ‘HRM’, some authorities have outlined it in terms of its functions, some others in terms of its objects and a few in terms of human relationships.

Thus, human resource management refers to a set of programs, functions, and activities that are designed and implemented to maximize the effectiveness of both employees and organizations.
